ISRAEL NEEDS A THOUGHTFUL, EFFECTIVE AMERICA By YudelLine Editor Larry Yudelson And some final words of inspiration below the fold
When yer head gets twisted and yer mind grows numb When you think you're too old, too young, too smart or too dumb When yer laggin' behind an' losin' yer pace In a slow-motion crawl of life's busy race... -- Bob Dylan, "Last Thoughts on Woddy Guthrie"

Time for Single Payer Health Coverage

In the summer of 2000 we were visiting Tel Aviv and our child got sick. we went to the local emergency room and at 1:00 in the morning were sent up to a specialist who provided care well beyond what we'd have expected from an emergency room in America. The reason the hospital was able to keep a full staff at night was because medical salaries are being kept low by a system of single-payer consumer groups, known as Kupat Cholim (loosely translated as Funds for the Sick), which are insurance services dedicated to medical care only.

There are many complaints about their efficiency, and some doctors practice private and semi-private medicine. But all in all we've discovered on repeated visits that the general, bottom-line kind of services available to Israelis is far better than what's available to the population as a whole in the US. When doctor salaries are kept lower (they're not martyrs, they make good money, just not ENORMOUS money), the entire system is kept at sane levels. Single payers are a virtual guarantee of keeping costs low. It may not appeal to the famous Yankee individualism, but with 40 million Yankees going untreated, it may be time to tone down the individualism.

I'm voting for Kerry today in the hope that a Democratic White House and Senate will begin to incorporate our medical services into the single payer system, in order to radically bring costs down. If this means more women and 3rd world doctors are attracted to the field, I'm OK with that. Let young Wasps go after money where they belong -- in banking and ripping off widows and orphans.
